2023 The Year of the Executioner

Forbes Magazine suggests that of 500 CEO'S 82% of them feel their organization is effective at Strategic planning. But Harvard Business Review found only 16% of top leaders were rated effective at strategy or execution. Most people either under estimate or overestimate their true capabilities or potential.

A heavy set older man robbed three banks during the day. He did so without hiding his face or his clothing and found himself looking at the cameras quite often. He was arrested within hours of his third bank robbery. He was shocked and dismayed because he soaked his entire body in orange juice before going out to rob these banks (orange juice can be used to make invisible ink). The bank robber thought this would make him invisible to the cameras. The authorities came to realize this robber wasn't insane just horribly misled. This kind of behavior goes hand-in-hand with most human beings and their assessment of their own ability as being much greater than they actually are.

Confidence is usually a positive character trait however at times it can put us in a position we aren't truly capable of executing well. I used to watch the talent show, American Idol. The one particular judge on this show was quite candid and very blunt in his usage of words. After the singers would perform they would stand before the three judges to find out if they made the cut or they were being cut. Those who got cut were usually in disbelief and in denial of the judges comments. These singers were unaware of their lack of talent. Or, perhaps they were misled by their family, friends, and or peers

The same is true with people believing they are great at developing and executing a well thought out strategy. Studies have shown that people with the highest levels of self-esteem often have the lowest test scores. Conversely, those with the lowest levels of self-esteem typically underestimate their own abilities.

In 2023 decide to do three NEW THINGS:

  1. Seek out people who are willing to be both compassionate and candid. Decide to get better.

  2. Don't buy the hype but get the weigh-in that will lead to the buy-in. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. (Even if this is a 3rd party source)

  3. Look for those who are excited about driving a process to get the desired and stated result(s). This shouldn't be decided by a person's position but their passion and track record.

BE THE EXECUTION ACCELERATOR IN 2023
