Leading People is a Messy Adventure.

You have a lot to do! You have your list of Must Do, Should Do, and Could Do's. This helps you stay within the boundaries of your priorities. But, working with people is a messy business and rarely do things stay within the bounds of your priorities. So how do you get the Must Do's done first? Recognize that the real monetary system within any organization isn't the amount of money one is paid. Rather, it is the amount of trust one has for another. We spend trust money when:

  1. We say one thing but don't follow through on it

  2. Put out fires and never get to the person(s) willing to help

  3. Saying the right things but rarely getting the results to prove it.

We can read a lot of articles, watch plenty of videos, and even listen to podcast after podcast. We saturate ourselves with way too much information that we get bogged down in information rather jumping in the drivers seat to actually drive change along with our people. Your responsibilities may be greater. But there is no greater way to exceed expectations than to have people working together in the same direction for the same results. To achieve a common goal should be priority one. Not just any goal but goals that advance the company and the team. If the company becomes more important than the person you will lose more people. Although if you can drive change and engage more people in the process you will create more people who want to create success for the organization. That is why it is called engagement.

Too much information can cause one to shut down and go into a frozen state. This is where they are just going through the motions to get the least amount of work done just to get by. Getting by is never the goal of a company or a high achiever. High achievers help others obtain their goals in the process of obtaining the company's goals.

Having the right amount of data and analyzing that data is important. It is like putting a puzzle together. We put together puzzles because they are challenging, fun, and we get to see the final destination that we were a part of making. This is exactly how we need to engage at work. Do these 4 investment moves and see if your team isn't energized and accomplishing more in 2023:

  1. Listen to you people, all of them and take actions. If you think you are listening the only way to prove it is through your actions. Are you getting the results you say you want. Is your team helping you get there?

  2. Speak with your people about job satisfaction and their future with your company on a monthly basis.

  3. Help others see they are heard

  4. Let others make decisions that effect their work and that of their teammates.

I hope your investments will pay off greatly this year!
