I have been serving the manufacturing industry for nearly 18 years and since 2019 I have been working with the OLDER ADULT CARE INDUSTRY too. There are some similarities in the problems facing both the manufacturer and the healthcare industry. Similarities in the Manufacturing and Older Adult Care Industry are:
1. High Employee Turnover
2. Leadership is convinced they are doing a good job.
3. Employees believe leadership needs to do a better job
4. Training needs to improve
5. Voice of the Employee: We believe our voice doesn't matter
6. Leaders believe they are listening to the employee
7. Data says that 92% of the CEO's believe they have compassion.
8. Data says that 50% of the employees believe the CEO's have compassion
If you have read the blog to this point you might catch the theme I see on a daily basis, DISCONNECT. When there is disconnection there is little listening. Where there is little listening there is little trust. Where there is a lack of trust and poor listening there is great disengagement and turnover. Everyone when asked will say they are trustworthy but many will admit that communication and particularly, listening needs to improve.
Long time NBA (National Basketball Association) coach Gregg Popovich is the longest tenured coach in the NBA with the same team (26 years). Over the years he and the Spurs took risks that other teams were unwilling to take. Like...
Identifying Overlooked Talent:
Back in late 20th century (90's) the Spurs were identifying basketball talent from nations other than the U.S. and this gave the team a distinct advantage over the others. Teams in the 90's used to think that players from other countries didn't want to play defense (no empirical data - just feelings) and they wouldn't socialize or learn English. The list went on like, they weren't proficient at dribbling and they didn't want to have a role other than as a starter and one of the last jabs against them was they were soft. This caused all the other teams in the NBA to ignore players that could have contributed to the success of their teams. Bias, lack of data, change, busyness, assumptions, perceptions and the like can cause us to miss the very things we need to have a winning team.
When every other team in the NBA was unwilling to take such risks the Spurs were the trailblazers (not the NBA Team from Oregon) they were recruiting basketball players from around the world. The San Antonio leadership was never stagnant nor did they rest on the status quo. They are always looking for new ways to improve and win. They don't look at what other people are doing and then mimic them. They want to stay ahead of their competition not hang out right beside them. In addition, they have a stable work environment and they listen to each player, each leader, and they introduce everyone into the culture they have built and want to continue building upon. It is a winning foundation!
