Revenue Matters, But Value Masters

Revenue matters but value masters. Work that serves human needs creates value. People will follow value generators. Are you a generator? Steven Jobs said, Apple believes that people with passion can change the world for the better. We will explore this a little more later in this blog. Our workplaces are filled with technology and people. In fact there are more than 630 million people in the workforce around the world. People bring skills, intellect, wisdom, dreams, hurts, desires, wants, needs, hope, and despair to the workplace and technology can help us do our work better.

Let's put a little twist on Jobs' statement, People with purpose can change the world. Everyone is looking for a reason to excel. It isn't enough to know the cost of something; a lot of people can do that. But few people can tell you the value of it. There was a popular song in the 1970's, "Looking for Love in all the Wrong Places." Too many small and large companies alike are "Looking for Value in all the Wrong Places." Real value doesn't come in how much I get paid by the hour. Work that serves human needs creates value. Why do you suppose so many company's advertisements rarely talk about the value of their products or services? Often we don't even remember what it was they were trying to sell. Most products are commodities like phones, shoes, clothes, food, and automobiles. Companies to differentiate themselves will appeal to your desires and what you value for fun, long life, health, entertainment, and quality of life. They focus on what you value most not what the value of their product is. It is subtle but very persuasive.

Apple believes people with passion can change the world. As a leader in the workplace can you capture the hearts of those you lead and help unleash more world changers? Or are you so focused on job descriptions, point systems, wages, and benefits that you can't see the real and true value right in front of you? People today are unhappier than at any other time we have surveyed people. People are more open to the value you have to add if only you would start thinking more about purpose than paychecks. Jobs say's it is those who are looked at as the crazies, Einstein, Martin Luther King, and others that change the world. These were people crazy enough to think they could change the world. Jobs goes on to say, it is the person crazy enough to believe they can change the world that actually changes the world.

You aren't called to be a Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos or Jesus Christ. But you are called to bring quality and value to the world. You do have the ability to bring value and add value to the people in your workforce. Start today by knowing your value so you can inspire and capture the hearts of your workforce and find the "crazies" that will change your workplaces. Be a value generator (leader) first and then you won't have to worry about revenue and employee turnover.
